I found Leonard Slip's baptismal record in registers of the Catholic church at Scheinfeld, Mittelfranken, Bavaria, Germany. They show that he was baptized as Johann Leonard Schlepp on 21 August 1748, a son of Johann Georg Schlepp (Schloepp) and his wife Magdalena. Leonard had an older brother with the same name who was born in 1741 and died in 1746. Here’s the source: Katholische Kirche (Catholic Church), Scheinfeld, Mittelfranken, Bavaria, Germany, parish registers. Held by Archiv des Erzbistums Bamberg (Archive of the Archbishopric of Bamberg), Regensburger Ring 2, D – 96047 Bamberg, Germany. The records are written in Latin. Here’s a summary of the information in each record.
Fiche 147, page 101
1741. 28 August. Georg [Georgius] Schlepp, Protestant
[heterodox] widower in Frankfurt, and Magdalena, Protestant [heterodox] widow of
Heinrich [Henrici] Fleischmann, were married in Scheinfeld. Then it says, "..Joannes
Georgius Schlepp ex franckfurth…" That would be Johann Georg Schlepp of
Frankfurt, but I can’t make out the other words.
Fiche 44, page 236
1742. 13 December. Baptized Johann Leonard, son of
Georg Schlepp of Frankfurt and Magdalena, Lutherans. Johann Leonard Kaltenbeck
of Taschendorf, godfather.
Fiche 150, page 156
1746. [1?] May. Buried Leonard, son of Georg Schlepp
of Frankfurt.
Fiche 45, page 262
1748. August 21. Baptized Johann Leonard, son of Georg
Schlepp of Frankfurt and wife Magdalena. Johann Leonard Kaltenbeck of
Taschendorf, godfather.
Leonard Slip's mother Magdalena Marr, and her first husband, Heinrich Fleischmann, were married in another nearby town, Kirchrimbach, on 27 Apr. 1733, according to FamilySearch.org.
I wrote these two articles for the Fall 2004 and Winter 2008 Generations, the journal of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society:
